Notes on Biophilia by Bjork

1. Moon: This is a very charming opening track with strings and fragile, yet playful vocals that immediately give away that it can be no one else but Bjork here. The repeating tunes are very comforting, especially when the choirs bring new sense of softness in there. When you let the song fully immerse you into a world of its own it becomes really enchanting.

2. Thuderbolt: Abrupt and a lot more dark-toned than the previous. The mesmerizing synth effects join in bringing more consistency into the song, makes it living and breathing. Midway through rhythm thumps its way in. this is when is get more flowing, where you just want to sway around with your eyes closed. but the feature that makes the strongest impact is Bjork's intense voice, that has such strength and depth in it.

3. Crystaline: That xylophone that follows throughtout the song has something really childlike to it, like an innocent lullaby. Her vocals are center stage here and the way she articulates words I find it really intriguing. The outro breaks out as drums roam in. I don't even know what to call it, generally people say it's 'epic' with all its rapid beats and sharpness, so I guess I'll go with that. I wouldn't really associate this type of sound with Bjork, but strange enough it really works in contrast with the first part of the song.

4. Cosmogony: All I can say about this is that I love the subtle passion and the sense of wide space. The echoes and the deep bass are purely divine. This is just oh so gorgeous and dreamy.

5. Dark Matter: Again a more somber tune with a haunting feel to it. It really takes a hold of you when you delve into it.

6. Hollow: I find this somewhat cinematic. Technically this really represents how much effort she put into this record instrument-wise. The electronic beats fused together with different elements give the organ-based song a nice twist.

7. Virus: This is utterly sweet and beautiful. All the lovely little, metallic clangs chime all round, resembling a music box. I absolutely adore the softer tone in her voice here. This just makes me smile, I can't quite tell why.

8. Sacrifice: The instrument used in this is very fascinating. Sudden, frantic beats add an electric feel to the song, fused with her vocals they're something really captivating.

9. Mutual Core: Slow-building with interesting effects that bring a visual aspect to the song. It breaks into a full electronic tune, which is actually pretty danceble. Overall very impressive.

10. Solstice: I reckon it's the same instrument from the very first half of the album. The Simpleness and vulnerability about this song bring the album to a wonderful close.

VERDICT: My knowledge on Bjork's works is regretfully limited, so I can't really make a comparison to her earlier albums, nor compare her to any other artist for that matter, not that her music exists in a vacuum, but because I honestly can't think of anyone that sounds alike. She definitely outdid herself with this album, proving her versatility and ability to make such unbelievably gorgeous music. Perfect for dim, wintry evenings, when all you wanna do is just to curl up on the couch and drink tea.
