I know I said I really anticipated this album in the reawakening of listening to "bad fever" from Fruit and all the cool Denmark yet American indie pop sounding Alternate pop from The Asteroid Galaxy Tour but to tell you the truth I was never into that sugar coated bubble gum pop and when it goes down and I play the album that part of me who dislikes pop vanishes. It is something in The Asteroid Galaxy Tour that get me and there is something original in them that I don't see in other generic indie pop or pop acts. I can't decide what it is but I will break it down brick by brick and explain why i think this band and album is just so great in the track review.
Track Review (tracks courtesy of THEM):
1. GOLD RUSH PT. I: This song is a good intro to the very cool and funky songs that await when opening the album. Its a short song and i don't see anything bad its pretty cool with so many layers piled on top of each other, trumpets, drums, synth, vocals, bass. There's just so much sound and energy.
2. DOLLARS IN THE NIGHT: "WAHHH!" and with that word the song just starts or more like erupts. The trumpets and organ give it a funky feel and really great vocals turn this turn into an instant hit (even if it isn't a single). "its insane fame, who's to blame? fame! it's insane Fame, What's her name? Fame!" and with those words the song ends.
3. GOLD RUSH PT. II: Man the screaming vocals in this song hooks the three leading songs together perfectly its just amazing and a pretty good vibe it sounds just like the first one but less upbeat closing to the end.
4. MAJOR: If you thought Dollars in the Night really blew you away this song just continues the progression it just starts from the silence and with the beating drums the song just onward gets a lot more upbeat and the vocals are changing a lot and this is the essential thing about The Asteroid Galaxy Tour her vocals just snatch you up by your ears and directly infect your brain and from there the beat enters your bloodstream from the right Atrium and it goes into your lungs and before you hear the words "A la Carte" your dancing or bopping your head more than the Big Bopper. Over all i don't see anything negative in this track although the repetition in the beat gets boring but that doesn't take much to fix just start singing and you'll be cured
5. HEART ATTACK: This is the first single in the album hmmm? i don't know if its any better than Major but this track is just as cool, though not as funky and groovy, but just as fun as Major. Just listening to the song is fun but when you watch the music video its just so fun you wanna jump into the green screen and dance. The song just has the right formula of bass, and crashing drums and when you throw in some vintage sounding synth bleeps reflecting off the walls it just smacking you with great vibes.
6. OUT OF FREQUENCY: This song is a little less upbeat but the song is still good the chorus is great it really sounds great with the drum staccato in the drums and bass fit in quite nicely with all of the wacky noises coming from the synth. Then a clarinet i believe gets a great and much needed solo in the song to add that flair that it was missing.
7. CLOAK AND DAGGER: The Trumpet really Stands out in the start of the song and after a while once the song gets calm the bass really vibrates its like in a synth style sound and the thinnest part of the song is when she is singing the verse. The only sound is from bass, bass drum and as the song progresses a snare and whistling. Her vocals are really great in the mists of the last minuet of the song.
8. ARRIVAL OF THE EMPRESS PRELUDE: AHHHH the Infamous Preludes in albums it doesn't last very long but the guys are humming absent of the vocals from Mette with a really loud bass drum.
9. THEME FROM 45 EUGENIA: The bass is great in this song. No seriously its good, when i first heard this song and got to school the next day this song was stuck in my head not the other ones. It was because of the part in 1:14, 3:04,and 3:49 those parts are really great they remind me of their debut Fruit.
10. MAFIA: This song sounds so chill even though the meaning is like "out to get you" like the song states its about "bad guys" gangsters and the mafia. Its a cleaver track and i like how its really a great song musically but when you hear the lyrics it isn't such a happy theme like the music.
11. GHOST IN MY HEAD: I like all the songs on this album a lot but this track is the low point in the album its an OK track i could get into it at a party but right now i really don't feel this track much its really slow and the track isn't as aggressive as the ones before.
12. SUBURBAN SPACE INVADER: This track isn't as great as it seems it still has the vibe from ghost in my head. The song has really great bass though and the synth is in staccato form again but the track isn't really giving you a great message or dancy beats that make you move so yeah its kinda slow.
13. FANTASY FRIEND FOREVER: Okay this song is a little better and i like this a lot its in my top songs for this album i would listen to this more than once and i really like the part where she goes "weeo weeo wooo wooo" and this song is slow but it has a good groove and great lyrics that make up for the slowness.
14. WHEN IT COMES TO US: This song has the intro of something that sounds like it came from Foster the Peoples Torches. When the vocals from Mette come in you don't dance but this song shocks you a little its a somewhat melancholy track and its lyrics suggest pain emphasized by the guys echoing her. The track is good but it kind of makes you sad that the album is over and well that's good because then you get to hear the album again!
Verdict: Weeeeell now this album is really something to listen to this year its probably the best thing I've heard this year so far and that's something. I think i like it more than the Maccabees, Snow Patrol, and Cloud Nothings. This album is so fun groovy and clever lyrics and Mette has such an awesome style that really blows you away its really fun when shes around and she is a bit "full of herself" but hey that's fine her aggressiveness towards music is probably what made her "big" and her vocals aren't as good as in Fruit but they aren't as fake as before she doesn't use as many voice processes. i really dig this album a lot and i REALLY enjoy listening to it over and over and over so i totally recomend it.
RATING: ♪♪♪♪/♪♪♪♪ Four OUT of Four Eighth Notes
