Cloud Nothings a band from Cleveland, Ohio and they are a relatively new band in the music scene. They have three records from the genesis in 2010 and they are an Indie Rock band that specializes in the art of Garage Rock. They "grew up" in this album and like the title says it attacks the memory you had about them in the prior releases. If you have heard anything by them before you would know that this album sounds completely different from the other ones because there isn't the pop in there just have a listen to the first and last songs of each record and you can tell there is a lot more differences between the albums before this one and this album. I think the maturity is in part the workings of working with Albini the guy who produced In Utero by Nirvana. Well anyway that's just something I noticed on the progression of the band and here's the track review:
1. No Future/No Past: This track starts off really creeping up on you the evil sounding bass and the vocals are really 3 dimensional you can hear it as if he was sitting right by you now singing. In an odd way this reminds me of early Radiohead material and of the grunge days and its true the 90's are making a big comeback. The lyrics aren't at all complicated its just a bunch of repeated phrases and pretty redundant.
2. Wasted Days: This track is really great its super fast really loud and it sounds so full of caffeine and sugar that it could make a kid faint. The lyrics are really simple and short yet amazingly catchy. Its a really great track believe me. This track also features a really long instrumental section shortly after the 2:20 mark and his vocals finally come back after the 7:40 mark and it ends very loudly after that session ends.
3. Fall In: This track is quick to start the music already starts and the vocals, drums, and guitar are already there knocking down your door. This track kind of reminds me of some smashing pumpkins its full of energy and it’s really in your face.
4. Stay Useless: The guitar is the really usual sounding Alternative and really generic sounding. Don't get me wrong I like the song and its a great track but I can't see anything different in this song that redefines my perspective on them or anything mind blowing, it is however a great song to listen to when you don't want to give a crap about the world and I do admire his lyrics for that.
5. Separation: It is in a quick pace, loud, and the guitar is full of distortion. The song is pretty short and since it’s an instrumental it shows how they're sound is. The guitar changes ever so often and in the song there is this part where the guitar starts to get creepy and it fills your spine with chills for that moment.
6. No Sentiment: OK like I said before you can really hear the influence of The Smashing Pumpkins in both the vocals and the music. Maybe it’s just me but I can hear a Billy Corgan in Baldi's voice.
7. Our Plans: I guess this one of the “poppier” tracks on this album, this song is full of "indie sounding" pop and it’s like the stuff they used to make before in the albums in 2010 and 2011. The drums are really fast and the vocals are just like before Billy Corgan style.
8. Cut You: The vocals are denser and there are more of the vocals in this song unlike the other songs on this album. It has a really nice ring to the song and I know I say this a lot but this song is a good way to end this album, it isn't too calm or to in your face like Wasted Days, but it is a really great up beat song and a really good listen.
