Notes on Be The Void by Dr. Dog

Hello this is Obed, this week (actually last week) the new album by Dr. Dog was released. Dr. Dog is a different bunch you know they got that lo-fi sound down and they have that really rocking bass guitar but really what stands out about Dr. Dog is that they had a mission and they had a vision. They are from Philadelphia, and got pick up by My Morning Jacket to tour with them and soon after that they became discovered by people who really dig the psychedelic pop and lo-fi sound. The concerts that they have played in are usually on of the best live performances you could go to. Toby and Scott is the heads of the band and they've been writing together for a while. They were made to have fun and back when the band was just getting started they we're all in a lot of bands and they were not all about "hustling" or trying to get gigs but Dr. Dog was different it was just for the hell of it. Now with this in mind just try and see if Fate and Shame changed the music in this album with the fame that they gained from them...

Track review (track list from the Dr. Dog website):
1. Lonesome: Still Hearing the lo-fi sound in this song and it sounds very influenced by reggae and yes its pretty chill its calm and its a slow jam and you can jam to this. The most notable part of the song would probably be the lyrics, which give the impression they were going for reggae feel also the blues style guitar licks we're also giving this a very scrappy raw sound.

2. That Old Black Hole: Here comes the bass the bass in this song is the most notable part of the song. The bass is helping the song progress very well it moves in a steady pace and it’s not just the bass but also the drums moving along. The tempo and song drastically change in 1:42 just for a little while and it doesn’t really seem good but then the drums roll and fill the gap and fix that sound. The sound in this song overall is a lot smoother then the song lonesome.

3. These Days: I'm trying to keep all my notes on each song short but this little song here sounds like the strokes and its a lot quicker then I’m used to listening to in regards to Dr. Dog. I may be wrong though.

4. How Long Must I Wait?: Do I hear oriental influences in the intro or is that just coincidence? Well it seems to have a very oriental feel to it and its very calm and it flows well.

5. Get Away: I think the most notable thing in this song is the singing and the Bongo drums. They give the song a very nice and smooth feel to it. The singing is really great and it should be appreciated in this song.

6. Do The Trick: there are a lot of lo-fi sounds and this album has a lot of variety between the songs. In one song you hear reggae in another folk and in another still you can hear a David Bowie but that's all really good fitted with that very rugged lo-fi Dr. Dog sound.

7. Vampire: Just the name of the song is a great indicator of awesomeness in the song. Just listening to it you can really hear a My Morning Jacket in them. Except well the lo-fi goodness that only Dr. Dog can create.

8. Heavy Light: More pogo/Bongo drums are in this song and its really easy going his vocals are really great the refrain fits well with the atmosphere in the song.

9. Big Girl: this song reminds me so much of Buddy Holly its scary. I can hear some old Rock n roll here and yeah I'm really, really happy for this sound.

10. Over Here, Over There: I think the most notable thing in this song is that drumming. It's powerful but it keeps it really together tight and wrapped around the finger of the bass.

11. Warrior Man: Ok I'm pretty sure that little bleeping wasn't lo-fi... I'm kind of disappointed I didn't think that they would use synths. But man this song is really catchy regardless of the tiny abandonment of lo-fi.

12. Turning The Century: hmm lets see I hear some really blues style guitar I hear some folk and it's pretty good it's not so much catchy musically but lyrically it is pretty catchy and it's very raw sounding you can hear imperfection that most people hate but should be appreciated because we aren't perfect so mistakes should be made and it's just the way you make the mistakes seem that makes you different from other people/bands.

Verdict: Well to tell you the truth i wasn't really swayed or moved by this album it wasn't as serious as 'Fate'. The thing that really does get me was the amount of influences you can hear in this album and for that reason i do give em some props and not just dismiss the album completely.
