Holy crap 26 songs! WOOOO! MAN. This band is one if the only reasons I'm proud I'm from Missouri. Anyway SSLYBY is a band from Springfield, Missouri. They're an indie band. In my opinion they are just catchy acoustic with a slight hint of electric rock. If that was a music genre. They are really awesome one of my favorite bands and probably the most under appreciated band in the indie genre even though a recent band (telekinesis) stole SSLYBY's sound and is all popular and crap but SSLYBY isn't that well known... But this album shall change they're minds (plus they cover nirvana really well).
Notable tracks:
1. The clod and the pebble: Well it starts off slow and sad, its very thin. Philips vocals begin so very melancholy, yet beautifully in tact. An elegant song with natural feedback and lovely violin. Great album opener.
2. Let's get tired: Acoustic and with the trademark SSLYBY sound, the lo-fi goodness of southern Missouri. I'm coining it Springfield-Sound. great catchy song with great vocal harmony but this is to be expected of this band
4. Song W + Song L: Starts of acoustically again and its softer and melancholier if i can invent a word to describe it. the lo-fi recording douses it with an extra layer of "indie" sound and proving the originality of this band in the broom days.
5. Sweet owl: Horns... that's a change from the usual. the whispering vocals by Philip just smothers you with mystery and curiosity on what he is saying. This song is very catchy and layered perfectly its not too this or thick but just the right width
7. Tin floor: A happier toned song with very joyful acoustic strumming. the vocals aren't too happy but this is a calm voice not too pleased but also content. A perfect mix for a somewhat lighter mood in this album.
8. Lower the gas prices, Howard Johnson: This is the big song of the album apparently with 16,705 plays on last.fm. Maybe its the controversy in the title or its awesome Electric Guitar.
11. Half-awake (deb): Tone is really soft, upbeat, and road ready. You could turn this on when your on a drive to a party or something (or a wedding that you missed D: man...) the best part is the start up in 1:37 to the end.
12. Not worth fighting for: Catchy acoustic once again, with a light clapping to it. It sounds very similar to modest mouse because of the whammy bar but still has the cool Springfield-Sound. Really catchy as and indie-pop song and its not too sad either its pretty upbeat and danceable.
16. We can win Missouri: Sounds similar to the songs from Let it sway. Its a faster paced song and has a really good groove to it its really great with the progressions and twining electric, catchy and still modest. The only down side is the song is way too short.
17. Same speed: Sounds similar to Edward sharp and the Magnetic Zeros for a while until the overwhelming Springfield-Sound takes over with the sweet and soft Melody. Its a very calm chill song to listen to right after raking a bunch of leaves...if you get leaves (in Missouri we get a ton).
18. Cardinal rules: THIS song is the song i was playing when the Cardinals won the world series this year sure im from KC and i think the Cardinals suck (in reality the Royals suck) but hey if its against texas skrew the texans im with the Cardinals all the way... but like the rant before me this song is a Cardinals fan song and since most of missouri (except Kansas City) likes the Cardinals its in a way a Missouri song.
23. Yellow missing signs: "let me tell you bout Missouri" This is my favorite song from this album its the most electronic song they have and its not that bad either its super catchy, fun, and well if you don't like it yeah there is something wrong with your music taste. Its a good jam i can't put it any simpler than that.
25. Bended: This song is a charming song, its a slow but happy and it sounds very Spanish or Italian but not flamenco style. He speaks about love i'm assuming. At 2:04 the song restarts but with a way bigger atmosphere with the ripping electric playing and the sound just getting amplified. Its slowly ends and softly ends with your eyes widened.
WEll thats an album i would totally review all the songs but 26 is a lot and anyway there are a few songs that i've heard before like What'll we do (demo) and basically all the demo songs. This is a great album and every song is good its the best album to come out in a long time and it rightfully overpasses the standards set in Broom. I advise you all to buy and listen to this marvelous album because its going to be worth the money you pay SSLYBY isnt just another Indie-Pop band they are a voice of a generation of small town kids in a day and age of small towns and big suburbs SSLYBY lives to tell the stories of growing up in a small town and looking at the two cities in Missouri and saying "how are we ever going to gain fame if im from Springfield?" but still gaining fame despite this and not just gaining fame but becoming the most succesful band to immerge from missouri in a long time.
