Subtract or sbtrkt is a Guy, a weird guy named Aaron Jerome, who is a DJ who wears natives ceremonial masks to hide his identity and to support anonymousnity, a word I just made up to emphasize my point of him being anonymous. He also explains that he isn't very social and that he believes that the music is more important than the person behind it. Which is true in an uneasy way.
Anyway he made a whole record with help from other folks, good job for getting yourself out there dude, this is a good record and I think its perfect timing after reviewing ritual union by little dragon.
HEATWAVE: weird bird sounds somewhere drowned in the sea of synth loops. Irregular drum beat lathered in bwooops and bweeeps. And native instruments with great looping at 1:50 awesome looping in fact that's the best part of the song those 10 seconds. Vocals by sampha if you call them vocals.
HOLD ON: idk what instrument this is and I don't want to infer a xylophone it might not be one but it really sounds like a wood xylophone with a synth echo... anyway its starts slow and thin then an accomplice xylo echoes behind with a nice bass drum complement. The vocals begin very strained in a good way lots of emotion you can hear the reverb at times and some background mythical sounds that should be ignored but it's on the down low. Speaking of the vocals his falsetto is Ahhhhhmazing and just listening to him sing "hold on hold on hold on" makes you squeam cus sempha's that good of a singer.
WILDFIRE: drum machine bwoop bwoop bwoop bwoops mixed in with the drum machine and oo oo vocal blip by little dragons lead Singer. The beats are... weird yeah that band drowned sbtrkts song with their weird electronic abstract sounds clearly. Well I'm not gonna complaint since the song is catchy and weird enough to scare away the electro-pop Hipsters. Also the tribal feel gets stronger and I can finally understand where little dragon got some ideas not all for ritual union.
SANCTUARY: idk how describe the sounds in the beginning, soon new vocabulary will have to do for sounds like that. Wavepunch that's a compound word that describes it. I coined it I invented it so use it. Wavepunch. Its like chill wave without the chill cus the weird creeps up on you and punches you. Anyway vocals by sempha and background vocals by little dragon? Eh idk that's my guess.
TRIALS OF THE PAST: sythonic computer software piano bleeds into the intro of the song which sends a shockwave to the drum machine and it ends vocals begin provided by sempha again with his masculine yet shaky emotional vocal output. More wavepunch sounds. Occasional flange bweeing. Strange transitions everywhere. It suddenly ends and new sounds start then the outro easily flows into...
RIGHT THING TO DO: and the vocals immediately begin from I believe roses gabor correct me if I'm wrong. Its a simple synthonic piano until it transitions into a whoop whoop environment which gently passes on to the first environment and switches back again and both the environments get together and this repeats for a while. The vocals differ alot between the effect that change it reverberate it and echo it to death.
SOMETHING GOES RIGHT: sempha vocals with a vintage sounding music environment it sound very Retro loopy but also new and chill but there's a strange essence to it that makes you wanna get up and dance like a fool.
PHAROAHS: vocals are either from Jessie ware or little dragon. Rnb sounds Retro sounding rnb though with great lyrics. Good combination of rnb and Retro electro
READY SET LOOP: Instrumental. Taking it old school. This sounds just like one of those jams you groove to and just boogie to.
NEVER NEVER: ok yeah I saw NPR's review of this song saying oh its so cool this is genius blah blah lyrics blah blah story blah. I also saw the rolling stone's completely rip of the first part of their review from NPR bit anyway if you wanna review lyrics fine there's websites like lyricsmeaning.com and other bull crap sites to explain lyrics and ideas of what they mean but I explain mostly music not restate the lyrics and blather on about em the lyrics are great but come on really?...anyway the xylophone returns again and the organ sounding synth backs it up with spoon sounding clanking and ringing very dub-steppy and nice touch of reverb on vocals slight hint of female vocals probably leftovers from the song before. Great bass drum add. Good way of thinning song to fade out.
GO BANG: instrumental. plucking strings of violins violas chellos and bass in the beginning. Synth bass background noise then fast hand banged drums. The happy loud wavepunch sounds kick in. Transition to thinner subtle sound. Then it grows thicker with layers piling up and transitions galore. Plucking returning and the bang drums returning and it fading out in a death only suitable for kings.
Sbtrkt has accomplished huge huge things in this album and he is going to transform and influence not just electronic music but all music for time upon time and he will influence a new subgenre in electronic music that I want to call wavepunch cus its a good name but the subgenre will be groovy and full of experimenting. Recommended listens: little dragon, sempha, burial, Jamie xx, Jacques greene, and James Blake.
